A hard week

|
This week has been a very hard and sad week for us as a helicopter from our squadron went down on Monday night. Two pilots and two crewmen went down about 10pm Monday night while performing an exercise over Fena reservoir here on Guam. One pilot and the two crewmen were rescued and survived with somewhat minimal injuries but we sadly lost one pilot, Christian Hescock. There are three investigations going on to see what went wrong so we don't know much at this time.
All of us here know this could happen to any of us at any time and it's been a sobering reality of the sacrifices the guys make everyday. But at the same time, it's been an incredible thing to watch the Navy community really pull together and support his wife Ruth and everyone else during this time. The memorial was yesterday and the funeral in the States will be sometime in the next week or so. Ruth is a strong girl and truly knows God has a plan in all of this. I had a great talk with her yesterday afternoon and I'm very grateful she's going back to Oregon to a great family and church family that will support her.
If you want to see what the community has said about him, go to christianhescock.blogspot.com and check out the website his brother has put together in memory of him. He was a great guy, a great friend to many, and will be missed.

By the way, those of you that called or emailed to wish me a happy birthday...thank you. Obviously we didn't celebrate much as we found all this out that morning. Birthdays are so anti-climactic anyway, right?
